Published by the Gulf Coast Shell Club, this book was created primarily as a guide for the many visitors drawn to the beautiful beaches of Florida’s northern Gulf Coast. However, it is far more than a typical beachcomber’s guide. This fifty-nine page volume features more than 203 species of mollusks, including those commonly found along the shoreline as well as many from deeper waters.

Each species is clearly illustrated with high-quality color photographs, typically presenting six to nine specimens per page. Multiple examples of the same species are often shown, and several entries include images of the living animals in their natural underwater habitats. Both common and scientific names are provided, along with typical size ranges and notes on habitat and distribution.

Although produced through a collaborative club effort, special recognition is due to Linda and Jim Brunner, who edited the book, and to Dr. Harry Lee, who served as consulting editor. This compact volume will be a valuable resource for casual beachgoers and an accurate, quick-reference guide for advanced shell collectors alike.

A SHELL COLLECTOR'S CODE OF ETHICS

I WILL

Make sure that I leave things as I found them during my shelling trips.

Return all objects I move or look under to their original positions.

Refill the holes I dig and the burrows I uncover.

Take only those specimens that I know I can clean and use.

Leave behind the damaged and young specimens, so that they may reproduce.

Leave behind no trash or litter, and discard no burning material.

Build fires with care but only where legal and permissible.

Obey all wildlife laws.

Always use good outdoor manners.
